Club Mount Stephen [Tea room]
1440 rue Drummond; 514-485-5729
According to Anne Sutherland's article in Montreal Gazette, February 17, 2002: "English high [sic] tea with a tour and historical talk by Johanne King every Wednesday at 3pm, provided enough people signed up." By the description given, it is an afternoon tea that will cost $24 per person: "Tea consists of delicate sandwiches, homemade scones served with clotted Devonshire cream and jam, small cakes and petits fours all washed down with tea or coffee." (by KH) March 2002. Updated May 2002 (by KH): According to Ricardo Larivée, in La Presse, May 9, 2002:** "Pour prendre le thé au Club Mount Stephen, on doit réserver. Note: Originally the Club was open only Wednesday afternoons. Now it seems to be opened, by reservation only, all weekdays.
**English translation: Reservations are necessary for tea at Club Mount Stephen. After all, this is a private club. Mme King greeted us in the grand salon, where a tea of finger sandwiches and other delicacies was served, rather untraditionally, in buffet style -- a boon for big eaters, as no one counts the number of cucumber sandwiches or cups of tea one consumes! English tea, at CDN $24.95, is served Monday through Friday by reservation only; contact Mme King. On Mother's Day there is a special Saturday tea, as well as a Sunday brunch.
Update: Closed summers, as are all private clubs in Montréal. Afternoon teas and guided tours resume in September. (by KH) 3G
